The centerpiece story I chose was on todays Columbian. It was about an 82 year old man named Hank Hayden who lives in Ridgefield and has a Mohawk. This man turns heads from people passing by, but also from people in the Ridgefield community. He is very actively involved in the community. He does upkeep at the local baseball park and serves as a town’s keeper, keeping an eye on the community.
1. Why should I care? It is a local man in the Ridgefield community who has a Mohawk and is actively involved. Timeliness and proximity. This is answered in the main story.
2. Why does he have a Mohawk? He wears his hair as a Mohawk to have fun and get peoples reactions. Most people find his hair “cool” because he is still having fun at his age. This was answered in the main story and was also shown in a photograph.
3. Where does he live? Ridgefield is the town he lives in. This is answered in the main story.
4. When did he change his hair? He changed his hair last summer and continues to change his hair colors with the seasons, his moods, and Ridgefield sports when he goes to cheer for them. This was answered in the main story as well.

1. This story seemed like it could either soft or hard news. I would say it is hard news because there are a lot of quotes, statistics, and dates. I would also say that it could be soft news because it is rather lengthy and does not follow an inverted pyramid style of writing. In my opinion I would have to say that it would be soft news because of the structure of the story. It has statistics, quotes, and date, but it did not follow inverted pyramid style and it was lengthy.
2. I did not feel that there was much bias in the story besides the fact that the story was expressing this increasingly popular was of birth in the local area compared to some other areas in the country. There were plenty of quotes arguing both sides of the issue and I did not feel the journalist expressed any personal opinions about the topic covered in the story.

After listening to a little bit of NPR news I found that the quotes are used to back up the generalized opinions of the interviewers. Maybe it was just the part I listened too, but here is a link if you wish to listen for yourself.http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90127350 The news quotes seemed to be descriptive in parts, but the interviewer always seems to fit his opinion into what actually happened.

Web Log #2

I found a good lead in The Columbian on Friday, April 18th, 2008. The story was Pope Benedict prays with the abuse victims and I found the lead in this story to be a good one. The lead was, "Pope Benedict XVI prayed with tearful victims of clergy sex abuse in a chapel Thursday, an extraordinary gesture from a pontiff who has made atoning for the shame of the U.S. church the cornerstone of his papal trip to American." I felt this lead was good because it answered who, what, when, where. and why at the very beggining of the story like a lead should.
I also feel that I found a bad lead in The Oregonian on Monday, April 14th, 2008. The article was about a crate that carried letters of a World War 2 romance. The lead was, "Let's say you owned something for a long time. Maybe it's a blanket, or a coffee mug. A simple thing. You've used it everyday. It's become worn to the shape of you, to your touch. Each crack or imperfection or wrap in fabric acts as a marker of the years that it has stayed in you possession." Nearly the entire introduction of the story does not contain the who, what, when, where, why, and how like a lead should.

I chose the story about the Pope striving to heal wounds of the sex abuse scandals of the Catholic Church. The story was in The Columbian's paper on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 on the A5 page. I think the story is news worthy because it has the qualities of timeliness, celebrities, human interest, conflict, impact, and trends.
